I'm not contradicting mylesf you are misunderstanding what has been written. Kids that are under the age of 14 do not need to be taught how to win games it is already in their nature. Watch any group of children playing any sport where they organize themselves and are not controlled by adults; they always play to win, are always competitive, and always try their best. The problem arises in youth soccer when we introduce adult coaches who are supposed to be there to teach. Those coaches play to win' by relying on outliers, in terms of advanced ability or advanced physical development, to win games. They do not focus on teaching players the skills required to be successful in the game, and instead focus on the result (winning). A great deal of research has been done with respect to the psychological development of young children. They derive a great deal of their positive self image from being able to master skills at young ages and be able to apply them in a competitive setting. When we fail to focus on developing those skills, and instead focus solely on winning, we are missing a vital opportunity to boost a child's self image. This can (and often does) lead to that child quitting the game for good, as they do not have fun playing the game. The winning' aspect of youth football is far more important to the adults than it is to the children, unfortunately. And too many of those adults just can't get their heads around the idea that if they did a better job of teaching kids the skills of the game, over the long-term, they would have a better chance of winning more games when it mattered.
