Very good observation, Bruce. The clrutual difference you observe between Canadian Culture and Chinese (could be Korean) is the way people think what qualifications are most required to land on a job. People in some Asian cultures think that the higer education level is, the higher chance to get a perfect job. Immigrants who came from the cultures have a tendency to pursue a more education, or another degree rather than gaining practical experiences or sharpening skills in their field. It makes sometimes even harder for them to have a job in their field since the gap between their education level and experience/skill leve has become remotely wide. Another reason for their obsession with education is that they want to compensate for their lack ofCanadian experience with a higher education in Canada. They think that it is a survival strategy workth investing money, time and energy. Compared to their native Canadians, they have more barriers such as language, experience, lack of understanding Canadian culture, network, etc. They feel desperate to get even to native Canadians by achieving a higher education.
